Party Wall Surveys (Party Wall Act 1996)

The Party Wall etc Act 1996 provides a framework for preventing and resolving disputes in relation to party walls, bounday walls and excavations near neighbouring buildings.

A building owner proposing to start work covered by the Act requires agreements to be set up between neighbours to ensure strict control over the methodology of construction whilst building, developing, altering and refurbishing properties and or land within the criteria set up by the Act.

Steans Associates offer specialist and detailed advice in respect of the Act and can act on behalf of the Building Owner, the Party carrying out the works or the Party whose property may be affected by the works.

The Act covers issues relating to works to party walls, certain types of excavation, building on boundary lines etc. An online version of this Act can be found on:-
